This music video was a blast to direct! Comic book powers, superheroes, visual effects, lots of talented actors, and a really fantastic, positive song.
It’s been a few years since I’ve directed a music video for Kirby Krackle. Our last project, filmed in 2011, has been one of my favorite projects. I’ve been a big fan of the band and when “Mutate, Baby!” came out I quickly identified “The Day My Powers Arrived” as one of my favorites on the album. I’ve been a huge X-Men fan since I read the Chris Claremont run as a pre-teen, and that classic late-80s and early-90s X-Men feel is something that I never felt was well-represented in the movies (sorry, guys – I’m not a huge fan, though the most recent ones are a bit better).
When Kyle called to ask if I’d like to direct a music video for this song, I jumped at the opportunity, despite being so swamped with work that I was sleeping a few hours each night (which generally describes my life since at least the mid-1990s, but even more so during this last Summer). Without a multimillion dollar budget, it seemed incredibly daunting – my vision for the mental images associated with this song would require some very heavy visual effects that would be far, far beyond the budget of this project. So we got creative!
